MaruReader is a free, open-source app for learning Japanese on iPhone and iPad. Read books, manga, websites, and YouTube transcripts with a dictionary close at hand.
- A dictionary at hand. Look up unfamiliar words, recognize inflected forms, and hear pronunciations from audio sources. Add dictionaries in Yomitan format.
- Read Japanese ebooks. Enjoy vertical text in EPUB books and look up words in a compact popup.
- Look up words in manga and photos. On-device text recognition lets you tap an area, then choose a recognized word. Import manga as ZIP or CBZ, or attach a mokuro file to use its text instead.
- Read the web. Look up selected text or use OCR in the built-in browser. Pages fill the screen with a floating toolbar, and a content blocker reduces distractions.
- Learn from YouTube. Open a video’s transcript next to the player and tap any word to look it up. The transcript follows along as the video plays. Transcripts are provided by YouTube for videos that have them.
- Keep the words you find. After setup, save vocabulary to Anki with context, readings, and definitions, or review and edit the note first. From YouTube, notes include the sentence, a frame from the video, and a link back to that moment. Requires separate Anki software.
